I have learned SO many things so far in my short teaching career. I could probably do a list of 50 or even 100...but I figured the highlights are good enough. Plus, who has time to read 100?
<br />
<br />
25. Teaching is tiring.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIoGkLL9z-bv_mAm3yvhTfMnBGNy5WID04wxf3ssXH7kD1iA0k-9UpsbS9CYplCu_FoWy7HdgoitGT4VMdUkeIjEkCqZISL-5pDFYdOCwaH-5NrbjInUlz6j7Dn69ouAyjLD64-o4jUy2D/s1600/catmeme.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="236" data-original-width="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIoGkLL9z-bv_mAm3yvhTfMnBGNy5WID04wxf3ssXH7kD1iA0k-9UpsbS9CYplCu_FoWy7HdgoitGT4VMdUkeIjEkCqZISL-5pDFYdOCwaH-5NrbjInUlz6j7Dn69ouAyjLD64-o4jUy2D/s1600/catmeme.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
24. If you play it in your classroom, you will hum or sing it at the grocery store, in the car, and while making dinner.<br />
23. You will feel lost, but you WILL get the hang of it.<br />
22. Talk and build a relationship with the grade level above and below you. They are your best resources and allies.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE7-k5TsvxlonLDf9qhZp8pHqLZf7DJD1EQ3xlGBzTeZKlRsYvGHPS_VwMXxdogi6WTRX1NCAQ255KvaDxMWvibXnPZMGJ_w3q6Np2ZXAPhyphenhyphenlgv6OKGmUGpFPvBYxRpeGmuXmlwroG0nkZ/s1600/firstday.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="960" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE7-k5TsvxlonLDf9qhZp8pHqLZf7DJD1EQ3xlGBzTeZKlRsYvGHPS_VwMXxdogi6WTRX1NCAQ255KvaDxMWvibXnPZMGJ_w3q6Np2ZXAPhyphenhyphenlgv6OKGmUGpFPvBYxRpeGmuXmlwroG0nkZ/s320/firstday.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
21. I won't have a Pinterest worthy classroom and that is OK! There are some beautiful classrooms out there, but do what works for you. It's important to keep in mind what you and your students like and what your budget allows. Don't go broke on items that will inevitably be scribbled, glued, and spilled on.<br />
20. The visitors to your room to observe- they are invisible. Do not work yourself up over an observation or walkthrough. They are only seeing a quick snapshot of your day.<br />
19. Communicate with parents. There are so many ways to do this. Do what is best for you and the families in your classroom.<br />
18. Do not compare yourself to other teachers.<br />
17. Grad school while teaching is tough (but doable)!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7BDrE4rSdApdnbGOlXHRgELNRr3SLd4gEk9X6xwnEfqTOoUyUgERy9oDX22m1z_qVuvVXjFs8a1Id0FWdX6newnDBI_yh76f1hDJTMvkNWD9l-PNnc41f0eGwhrZfYg4DaYJpqJkIy7dv/s1600/gradschool.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="774" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7BDrE4rSdApdnbGOlXHRgELNRr3SLd4gEk9X6xwnEfqTOoUyUgERy9oDX22m1z_qVuvVXjFs8a1Id0FWdX6newnDBI_yh76f1hDJTMvkNWD9l-PNnc41f0eGwhrZfYg4DaYJpqJkIy7dv/s320/gradschool.jpg" width="310" /></a></div>
<br />
16. Scholastic Book Clubs can be your best friend. There are so many ways to get cheap (or free books with points).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS4qXqNoN9L_SXNtNjlKcaDFT90hwwT34ra-TLx6RoRytmCDqi0YbwYxkv28k7lllzaDzzS79aWrwG26Z4cIW1SAtvI6uxqm4AvZja594LDL7KLwEPxivF9jrm621fexqiaHpxY-hyIxrh/s1600/scholastic.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="772" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhS4qXqNoN9L_SXNtNjlKcaDFT90hwwT34ra-TLx6RoRytmCDqi0YbwYxkv28k7lllzaDzzS79aWrwG26Z4cIW1SAtvI6uxqm4AvZja594LDL7KLwEPxivF9jrm621fexqiaHpxY-hyIxrh/s320/scholastic.jpg" width="310" /></a></div>
<br />
15. Give students jobs. They love to help! The most coveted job in my classroom is the sweeper vac.<br />
14. Read professional development books, blogs, articles. Who has the time? I know, it is hard. There are great resources out there to help you learn new ideas or improve on your teaching.<br />
13. Things will not go as expected. A lesson may flop, a field trip may be a dud, a behavior plan or chart may not work, and a whole list of other things. Learn from it and keep trying for a solution.<br />
12. Use your time wisely at school. Some days you want to sit on your plan time and recharge and that's okay! When you use your time productively at school, it is less you end up doing at home.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCH9qWx7QR9EkV_JmuXbU2v9b8LmDULTYQNFNM4hnaCtT_LG-x7JKUjdIP7xPTWOr2QaE6-H_Wrd8t6BriC8oE4mVlvF3wOdnwKqFvfGMs3ZgssJxVFupyc3TDvtFS-qADprOmKb_7f5uF/s1600/time.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="783" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCH9qWx7QR9EkV_JmuXbU2v9b8LmDULTYQNFNM4hnaCtT_LG-x7JKUjdIP7xPTWOr2QaE6-H_Wrd8t6BriC8oE4mVlvF3wOdnwKqFvfGMs3ZgssJxVFupyc3TDvtFS-qADprOmKb_7f5uF/s320/time.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
<br />
11. Set goals for yourself and your students.<br />
10. Be positive. Things going on in your personal life may want to creep in, but try to leave it at the door and give your students your best.<br />
9. Never underestimate the power of a good book blessing. One of my grad school professors call putting new books into your library or recommending a book to the class as a book blessing. That book will become gold and they will all want to read it. Always make a big deal out of new classroom library books.<br />
8. Limit responding to emails in the evening (set your own time of when this applies). This may seem harsh, but unless it is an emergency...it can wait. You are at home with your family and enjoy that time. The question about if there will be a kindergarten graduation can be answered in the morning.<br />
7. There is no such thing as having TOO MANY books in your classroom. Book fairs/flyers, garage sales, library sales, DAV/Goodwill, or even families are great resources for getting new or gently used books. If you were a student in your classroom, would you want to walk up to your classroom library each day?<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0y4dOKX6a_ZjQ10VnrMtakpvNLOinrtP6qY-8nn3ppA1GCXAOvu06bBe74uBCmUQIiWvBChD3-nmWtpbOSrXI2RkDTlHZwamL-9obLSVslQQpMtIap2NbLo15BD-2EjzeLjGNy2qMr86c/s1600/library.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="783" data-original-width="750" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0y4dOKX6a_ZjQ10VnrMtakpvNLOinrtP6qY-8nn3ppA1GCXAOvu06bBe74uBCmUQIiWvBChD3-nmWtpbOSrXI2RkDTlHZwamL-9obLSVslQQpMtIap2NbLo15BD-2EjzeLjGNy2qMr86c/s320/library.jpg" width="306" /></a></div>
<br />
6. Students can do more than you think they can. Do not sell them short or hold them back because they can't.<br />
5. Classroom management, classroom management, classroom management. It will make or break you. Always find new ideas and ways of managing your classroom.<br />
4. You cannot fill from an empty bucket. Take care of yourself and do the things you love to destress.<br />
3. Do not be scared to try new things- messy things, fun things, time consuming things. <br />
2. Your kids will always be on your mind. You will wake up at 2:00am sometimes worried about little "Johnny".<br />
1. More years of teaching...bring it!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Did you know that <a href="http://www.orientaltrading.com/teaching-supplies-and-stationery-a1-551419.fltr" target="_blank">Oriental Trading</a> has a wish list feature for teachers? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
They do! You can put educational items you want for your classroom on your list and parents or friends/family can purchase these items for your classroom. How cool is that? Each year I have a parent, PTO, or a family member or friend who ask what we need in our classroom. I am excited to be able to share my Oriental Trading Wish List.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To do this, first create an account on <a href="http://www.orientaltrading.com/teaching-supplies-and-stationery-a1-551419.fltr" target="_blank">Oriental Trading</a> (or use one you already have). Next, click on the Wish List underneath where it says "Hello, ____ Your Account".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Simply add items to your wish list by clicking "Add to Wish List". When you're ready to share your list with parents, your principal, family/friends...just click share and you have options on how to share the link.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In kindergarten we do lots of ten frame counting. I love how the trays can help ten frame practice be hands on and how small objects/counters can fit inside.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

More importantly how the alphabet looks to your students.<br />
<br />
<b>Displaying the alphabet</b><br />
Students need to see the alphabet in your classroom. For many kindergarten students, they are great at singing the ABC song, but they need practice being able to recognize letters and learn their sounds. When you display the alphabet through posters, word walls, and classroom labels...students learning is reinforced and letters are easily accessible.<br />
<br />
<b>Posters</b><br />
Alphabet posters are a great way for students to see the alphabet stretched out into a long line of posters. Placement of alphabet posters should be in a spot where students can see the posters easily. I catch many of my students using these posters as a reference when playing a word work game, during writing, and other classroom activities where they need to find a letter or sound. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/ABC-Posters-Lined-White-Wood-2643216" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyYd147FQTlxTwWNR8zF8pADjPEdsiRX5UWOo_oAedZn86hC-B2jVIJVmHW1Sj7WIlAuOgF0W1iSXBklQ8vxnDkQgnuKBqAlJfks4mrmtU8MvwabtIpFP7AkGfmlDlw-EDxmAHkIuIiT5Z/s200/Screen+Shot+2016-07-14+at+9.33.08+PM.png" width="148" /></a> <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/ABC-Posters-Lined-Purple-2640055" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFs6hUehiVe_RfWrmxTdOqfBJoWjEMjnbm8WmOis7vFRWsg7q_RLlY-vhQCSuXiUziz8pwwgMAo14u-ehChAYfYcrWxlhNGi7F_J4VNgv-dJoQwbuFEWv2LRomOvmguzkE1Eg-_JyIVwnc/s200/Screen+Shot+2016-07-14+at+9.34.13+PM.png" width="150" /></a></div>
Click on the examples above!<br />
<br />
<b>Word Wall</b><br />
Word walls are a great resource in your classroom if students know the purpose, you add words with your students throughout the year, and you model how to use the word wall during your writing minilesssons. Since the word wall is a great reference for young writers, it should be be easy to read and easy to identify the letters. Check and make sure that students can see the word wall from where they work at their table or in a flexible seating spot.<br />
<br />
I like word wall headers that have the letter (upper and lower case) and a graphic that matches the letter. Word walls are great with cute graphics that match your classroom theme, but if the graphic doesn't match the letter displayed, it is not helpful for young readers and writers. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Word-Wall-Headers-Lined-2633252" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="301" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbk4AQ53UsPUGff4LqsFB8pTEJnjQ-IyUovH91aYVU0F3IPrsmmNAIlbGwadjbgKw9b0ooYFjsuvrSX630ktWz2yXriumHXrNczaQ5YVm-D9_pWRakkD3ilwYxWBlT2dh5OAn83t9fI4pP/s400/Screen+Shot+2016-07-14+at+9.29.33+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
These word wall headers show clearly the letter and a large graphic that matches the sound of the letter. These are new headers I just posted this week! There is also a D'Nealian set too.<br />
<br />
<b>Cohesive</b><br />
I believe alphabet posters and word wall cards should be cohesive in your classroom. If we want our students who are learning letters and sounds to remember, it helps to have alphabet posters and word wall headers that match. Let's not make it harder on our little writers and readers who are making sense of the alphabet. Matching alphabet posters and word wall headers are an easy way to reinforce letter knowledge.<br />

<br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;">WE CAN PLAY!</span><br />
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4r1Mh6VzD3CrFKs-BEjVLv7uRtmDlnHBHj1DkA_srZWR_qyvgq0gsIiZTa7gGhyKDl0nEj_3w8ZpQz0hcKLoBX_-DZrMIG92JATnbTdzH0m-s9ut0QYTndqljwfCoxuHgOO6rLNt9lh_a/s1600/play.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4r1Mh6VzD3CrFKs-BEjVLv7uRtmDlnHBHj1DkA_srZWR_qyvgq0gsIiZTa7gGhyKDl0nEj_3w8ZpQz0hcKLoBX_-DZrMIG92JATnbTdzH0m-s9ut0QYTndqljwfCoxuHgOO6rLNt9lh_a/s320/play.jpg" width="255" /></a></div>
<span style="font-size: x-large;"><br /></span>
<br />
At an end of the year quick meeting the K teachers were told we can bring back a little time of play in our classrooms. <br />
<br />
*cue huge grin*<br />
<br />
Whether you are allowed to have the old-school center time or not, we all know the benefits of play. <br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Social- kids need time to interact, practice sharing, using manners, and time to talk and interact with their peers on their terms.</li>
<li>Behavior- we've all seen a rise in what's expected in kindergarten and a rise in behavior problems...that is not a coincidence.</li>
<li>Literacy/Math- when students play they are using and learning vocabulary, building math skills, and sometimes writing while playing.</li>
</ul>
<div>
I will have a 15-20 minute chunk to have a free centers time this coming school year. I am still trying to figure out how I want to do it. I will have the students choose what they do but will probably have to put parameters on how many students in the different areas. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
For the rest of the summer I would like to share things I have found or ideas I have about play in kindergarten. Once a week I will post an idea.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here is my new Market Place! I have play money, ordered some play food, I am making some felt food, and just need some chalk.</div>

Today I'd love to share with you some cards that I made as a forever *FREEBIE*. These world structure cards are a great addition to your classroom blocks. You can print and laminate the cards and have students try to build the structures. Each card has the sentence: Can you build ____ ? (with the structure name where the blank is). Also, each card is labeled with the location. I saw this idea on a blog but hers were a bit different and she didn't have a digital version unfortunately. I loved this idea and so I used photographs I bought from TPT and created these cards! Go check out <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FREEBIE-Can-You-Build-It-World-Structures-2615352" target="_blank">Can You Build It? World Structures</a>. <br />
Hey everyone! Things have been crazy town lately. You know the drill, end of the year crazy. Now that I've been settled into summer I thought I would let you all know what has been happening and tell you my goals for the summer (both professionally and personally).<br />
<br />
What's Been Happening:<br />
* I survived my first two semesters of grad school. I'm going for my Master's in Reading- Reading Specialist. Currently almost finished with one of my summer classes. I have another in July. Man oh man is it tough balancing classes and teaching, but I did it. I'd rather do it now than when I have little ones running around.<br />
* I am soon to be Mrs. Hadley! I got engaged on the last day of school at the end of our school-wide talent show. I had zero idea it was coming. My mom acted weird in February pretending to see if I wanted a ring she got for her work anniversary and making me try it on...but other than that, I did not know when, where, or how. I was completely shocked! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEDDDtF1Rfw-RbFOSJKPubveIG1tyyO9wDgnM_17cItu4coK0rEy2H-QDXn6QbbW0XqwF4sntPtcX4kx4-02mlRF0Q1HwPi7qetwA6QCxt4khLO7JT_Y3Wki2kB2GBp607xn3IHC7R2IgP/s1600/proposal.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEDDDtF1Rfw-RbFOSJKPubveIG1tyyO9wDgnM_17cItu4coK0rEy2H-QDXn6QbbW0XqwF4sntPtcX4kx4-02mlRF0Q1HwPi7qetwA6QCxt4khLO7JT_Y3Wki2kB2GBp607xn3IHC7R2IgP/s320/proposal.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
* I am getting married in early August! I am just crazy enough to plan a wedding in 2 1/2 months. I just got the dress yesterday! Everything is mostly good to go other than one bridesmaid dress and catering. Those are the biggies left.<br />
<br />
Goals:<br />
Professionally:<br />
* I want to read 5 professional development books this summer. I currently have almost 2 completed.<br />
* Print and prep all my KinderMath & KinderLiteracy units by the amazing Tara West over at <a href="http://littlemindsatwork.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Little Minds at Work</a>. I have almost all of the math units printed and binded into unit books.<br />
* Update my back to school information for Open House and first week of school.<br />
<br />
Personally:<br />
* GET MARRIED! :) My mom and Mr. Hadley have been amazing help!<br />
* Read 10 just for fun books.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKals7kh1tBqaWl9j8SEAS05PbkxsTvb6z-M-jQudhpFA7Io-WQh_hTRjFud72J4iR75885CgGYq9gETF4c07wltt1TEaAfFMVcvqfUWnSsCXna7Ctqx1WhMVR6XVl7La0kmpUcPIHyfK3/s1600/book.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjKals7kh1tBqaWl9j8SEAS05PbkxsTvb6z-M-jQudhpFA7Io-WQh_hTRjFud72J4iR75885CgGYq9gETF4c07wltt1TEaAfFMVcvqfUWnSsCXna7Ctqx1WhMVR6XVl7La0kmpUcPIHyfK3/s320/book.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
* Plan a honeymoon for Christmas break.<br />
* Relax and enjoy the summer!<br />

<br />
This school year has been a wonderful year but I have definitely slacked with blogging. I'm trying to get back into the swing of things. Since I'm thinking of new ideas to share with you I decided to tell and show you what's been going since I've been gone.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrt6bMzXWbHRYI4f0DUJAP1S-kBu8bFQI22j01AG_lL_Ox5Mt-HIj2DD9aD71F3-CZ4xDshawhXXPa9ssPkRuQaJVpaTpdtxYzGq7SjCiBXeZ00yLg13Gw6cSk8oBT3gUx2G6rvQ3rknNW/s1600/fatamy.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhrt6bMzXWbHRYI4f0DUJAP1S-kBu8bFQI22j01AG_lL_Ox5Mt-HIj2DD9aD71F3-CZ4xDshawhXXPa9ssPkRuQaJVpaTpdtxYzGq7SjCiBXeZ00yLg13Gw6cSk8oBT3gUx2G6rvQ3rknNW/s1600/fatamy.gif" /></a></div>
<br />
<b>1. Master's Program</b><br />
I am now in my second semester of grad school. My degree is MS in Reading with an emphasis in Reading Specialist. I'm taking classes online through a nearby college in Kansas. Since August I'm finally starting to get into the groove of being a student again. Methods of Research though I have decided it solely there to taunt me and get under my skin. My action research project is being typed up into parts the next few weeks then I can wash my hands of it all.<br />
<br />
<b>2. Fourth year</b><br />
My fourth year of teaching is winding down. Granted it feels more like spinning. Our events calendar is incredibly full with tons of events during the day and after school. I have had a very small class this year...only 15! I have come to realize that 15 a wonderful number for kindergarten. I've had 27, 24, 22, and now 15.<br />
<br />
We celebrated 100 days of school with 100 day stations.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_N82FHZQNQYAEoHWbi2O7WRzvru9tMz3UA-JVGj1U5oEaIqiMIMbN078WSKk-avJ5n2rHIjC8klPowSb88cxCVR3xRy5c-s4WmJQ2OqBrz9vHeIsdC499mSckVvPHJ6l31kGJKv1x-eah/s1600/april3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh_N82FHZQNQYAEoHWbi2O7WRzvru9tMz3UA-JVGj1U5oEaIqiMIMbN078WSKk-avJ5n2rHIjC8klPowSb88cxCVR3xRy5c-s4WmJQ2OqBrz9vHeIsdC499mSckVvPHJ6l31kGJKv1x-eah/s320/april3.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
We've been enjoying learning about nonfiction books and their text features during the winter. We did a penguin and a polar bear unit and learned about blubber.<br />

<b>3. Flexible/Alternative Seating</b><br />
In late February I slowly started to introduce flexible seating to my students. I'll do a post about this soon but in the meantime, here is a teaser...<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>4. Spring Break</b><br />
I had a very refreshing Spring Break this year. I spent some time redecorating my mom's house with her. Last Wednesday-Saturday my boyfriend and I took a little road trip down to Texas. We went to Waco for a day and Dallas for a few days. Anyone who knows me well knows that I LOVE Fixer Upper. I'm somewhat of an HGTV junkie and Fixer Upper is just amazing!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<b>I REPEAT! I SHOOK HANDS, TALKED TO, AND MET CHIPPER!</b><br />
<br />
My boyfriend and I visited Magnolia Silos (of course) right when they opened last Thursday. Afterwards we decided to go to Harp Design Co. (the custom furniture guy's store) and as we were leaving we saw Chip's truck pull up. I immediately recognized the huge black 4 door truck as his when it pulled up next to the store/shop in Clint Harp's driveway. Sure enough we circled the block a few times and it was Chip! He got out and was talking to a family so we waited a few feet away and then he came over and introduced himself to us and we shook his hand. He asked how Joplin has been doing post-tornado and thanked us for being fans and watching the show. He then asked if we wanted a picture and afterwards went back behind the store to Clint's wood shop to film a snippet for season 4.<br />
<br />
It's been a wonderful year and I'm excited to start devoting more time for blogging and creating some new things! <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>I thought I'd check in today and tell you a few things I am thankful for.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. <b>Family and friends</b>- I feel like this is generally on everyone's list...but it is true. They are rock.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. <b>Boyfriend</b>- We are about to celebrate six incredible months. I could go on and on about that man, but I won't bore you.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. <b>Teaching</b>- My year has been just an absolute breath of fresh air that I needed. I was coming off a very rough year personally and professionally. Last year was my complete rock bottom in most aspects of life. It's crazy to look back on it how everything has changed and for the best.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4. <b>Teaching Community</b>- I love connecting with others on Insta, TPT, and on blogs. You all keep me motivated and inspired.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lastly, I am throwing a Black Friday (& Saturday) sale in my <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Miss-Kates-Desk" target="_blank">TPT store</a>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving and enjoy some time with family and friends!</div>

Sorry it's been a few weeks since my last post and I totally know it is not Wednesday! I was gone yesterday mostly all day so I forgot to link up. I'm feeling the back to school tired also the ragweed in the air. The struggle is definitely real in the evenings at my house. Today was our 6th day of school and I'm getting use to this teaching thing again. :) <br />
<br />
Today I'm linking up with the <a href="http://www.kindertribe.blogspot.com/2015/08/what-worked-well-wednesday-math-journals.html" target="_blank">Kinder Tribe</a>. Click that link to see Learning With Mrs. Langley's What Worked Well Wednesday and the other posts!<br />

<br />
My What Worked Well Wednesday is....<br />
<br />
<b>MATH TUBS!</b><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ_REfD0WJpm_2-aKypOTHETLcd_kH39dCec_shkgTd3aA8XsWspif7qHQ6ZqICr3xQzN8MNi1ke509qhNiLZeu10HUZDi3_oF_1dUf9nwH1Vvql8h4UUEnkf4DPwClrEFju87b0CtC3n8/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-08-27+at+4.57.20+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="465" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjQ_REfD0WJpm_2-aKypOTHETLcd_kH39dCec_shkgTd3aA8XsWspif7qHQ6ZqICr3xQzN8MNi1ke509qhNiLZeu10HUZDi3_oF_1dUf9nwH1Vvql8h4UUEnkf4DPwClrEFju87b0CtC3n8/s640/Screen+Shot+2015-08-27+at+4.57.20+PM.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I am so very happy that I started math tubs this school year!!! Where has this been the last several years? I'm really not sure why I haven't tried it before. I had blogged several times this summer about how excited I was for this shelf. Well friends, here it is!<br />
<br />
I was unhappy with how sometimes I had 15-20 minutes at the end of my math block with nothing to do. We would end up playing SmartBoard math games, which were okay but not hands on at all. Now that I'm in my fourth year of teaching, I'm realizing things I did my first year can change and evolve. I had some great ideas then, but some I've realized I just did to get by being a new teacher (example...empty time after math).<br />
<br />
My students would participate in the math lesson, do their independent work, and then sit for 20 minutes watching a math game. Whomp whomp. <br />
<br />
Finally I was inspired to do math tubs. I've seen various forms and fashions of them around Pinterest and blogs. I decided to buy the cubby shelf, the tubs, and print out my math station games that had been on my computer but were not being put to good use. <br />
<br />
<u>What you need:</u><br />
* Math activities (printables or store bought)<br />
* Tubs or some form of container to store<br />
* Labels - I like organization and number labels just made sense. Plus I teach my kids to grab a tub (but you can't put it back if you don't like it), if I labeled on the outside what it was, they may not grab it.<br />
* A place to store the tubs - a cubby shelf, regular shelf, or any other space you can find...but shelves work the best.<br />
<br />
<u>How it works:</u><br />
Students can get a math tub off of the shelf. I tell my students they only grab one tub and they can't put it back until clean up. Students go sit down somewhere around the room on the floor and get started on the math activity inside. If they are with a partner they have to whisper. When it's time to clean up the tubs have to be put back on the shelf in order. <br />
<br />
Now, when my students are finished with independent work, they turn it in, get a math tub, and do the hands on math activity inside the tub. I have a small class this year so they can work with a partner or by themselves. I am using math activities from TPT and other resources in the tubs.<br />
<br />
Currently, I have lots of number sense activities such as this building numbers below. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
I am excited to see how this bunch with do with math now that I am adding more hands on practice!<br />
<br />
Now go share on the Kinder Tribe blog what worked well for you and pretend it is Wednesday like me!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07803783047642610609noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5772936474221049881.post-47412850329892785952015-07-31T08:27:00.004-07:002015-07-31T08:29:51.538-07:00Sayyy what?!Hey everyone! I wanted to do a short post for you about how I'm feeling at this point in the summer. This GIF below basically sums it up.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3xOPETFls-eatULMj46WTP0QDBjHoKQfuj_u8kTVAsSNOpekORA4QQ4514EMoc8WNJ6JmBe85FIcTCXrhXQ67-tSJ7dPyTD1PpnKCN3sHhGWRw-LMbAVpOtZMb8m8TTVVq7ZwsFAK5KNw/s1600/gillyschool.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj3xOPETFls-eatULMj46WTP0QDBjHoKQfuj_u8kTVAsSNOpekORA4QQ4514EMoc8WNJ6JmBe85FIcTCXrhXQ67-tSJ7dPyTD1PpnKCN3sHhGWRw-LMbAVpOtZMb8m8TTVVq7ZwsFAK5KNw/s400/gillyschool.gif" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Gilly (Kristen Wiig) is my favorite SNL character. A close second would be Stefan (Bill Hader).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyways, yesterday I was walking out to my car after working 7 hours in my classroom.. I was trudging along due to feet being tired and climbing up and down a ladder the day before. If I had the energy I would have walked out doing what Gilly is doing. ^</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><u>I AM DONE GETTING MY ROOM READY GUYS</u></b>! If the kids came on Monday, my room would be ready for them. I have just a couple of random little printouts to hang up and a few book bin labels to stick on that I've added. Other than that, I have less than 30 mins worth of work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5hZiNPREU6dp4oC1PFhDHYN1DU3G6ayYsKMl0wX2vIeYnv0-J8MZ9U7p0tfmRo12FGNYM_sWr4EfnszKhKFgcJPhtw6kYO-1yEdM7peQrFvb0g2P9vhcqKdrwtwadmVqdbJTRAegitWY2/s1600/july31a.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5hZiNPREU6dp4oC1PFhDHYN1DU3G6ayYsKMl0wX2vIeYnv0-J8MZ9U7p0tfmRo12FGNYM_sWr4EfnszKhKFgcJPhtw6kYO-1yEdM7peQrFvb0g2P9vhcqKdrwtwadmVqdbJTRAegitWY2/s640/july31a.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I won't give you a tour just yet, in a week or so. :) But here is the outside of my room. Our hallways are camping theme for our PBIS theme this year. I'm putting stars with the kids names on them on the bulletin board when I get the class list.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Out of four summers, I think this is the first one that I am finished cleaning, organizing, and rearranging before August! This year I also changed out some bulletin board colors and purged and donated. Whew.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My district goes back the 13th for teachers and 20th for the kids. So I plan on using the next couple of weeks to relax, catch up on some more books, mentally prepare myself for my first semester of grad classes, and do some planning! I should probably throw in the whole "not spending anymore money" part.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm excited for this upcoming school year. I'm doing some new things in my classroom. The few major ones are:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1. <b>Math Tubs</b> - students go grab one of the tubs after completing their independent work and working with a partner.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. <b>Close Reads</b> - whole group close reads with my kinders. I'm using <a href="http://littlemindsatwork.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Tara West's (Little Minds at Work)</a> close read bundle. I have put together a binder for her fairy tale close reads already because this year we are starting with retelling so I am doing the classic Gingerbread Boy, 3 Little Bigs, Goldilocks, etc. She has a bundle for that! :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. <b>A designated science/social studies time-</b> 3 days a week in the afternoon for about 20 mins. Before we tried to squeeze stuff in on occasion and mostly teach it through read alouds. This year my grade level partner and I are going to do more! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm feeling pretty great right now. I had a nice and rejuvenating summer. I needed it badly. I was talking with a few people at the school yesterday and we all said we are just ready to see the kids again. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have also been so excited lately being a part of the Kinder Tribe and being an admin for the Facebook group and collaborative blog. I've been introduced to lots of awesome people! I now have almost 100 followers on Bloglovin. A few weeks ago I had 11. Talk about being shocked! You all are awesome!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I hope everyone is enjoying their break, whether you have a few days left (that must be painful and somewhat hot to go back this soon!) or whether you have a month left. Just remember to take things in stride. Go at your own pace. If you need another week or so to relax before getting in the school mode, so be it. If you are like me and were just itching to get out of the house and get things done, then so be it. I've been thinking a lot lately (and seeing a lot in the blogging community) about how we need to not lose ourself in everything. Continue making time for you and finding something to relieve the soon to be busy and stress that is looming ahead. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Go do something fun with the little summer we have left! Have a great weekend everyone!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Amanda from <a href="http://polkadotsandpals.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Polka Dots & Pals</a> made this for me a month ago. It's me exactly! I have a scarf on and my iced coffee. Also my favorite color is teal and I have on earrings (I feel naked without earrings!) We are giving away a pal on the Kinder Tribe blog. Go check it out yesterday's post with the giveaways!</div>

My can't live withouts are a MUST. I wish on the school supply list I could only ask for Ticonderoga pencils, but it's a district list. :) I LOVE Pete the Cat. I have two giant Petes in my room. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I teach in the district I went to from K-12th. I didn't apply for anywhere else and I was crossing my fingers for K. This year will be year #4 for me. Kindergarten has always been my ideal grade. I just love the hilarity of it, the growth, the shaping of little people, the love for school, showing them my love of reading, being silly and they get me, and the fact that I don't have to teach multiplying and dividing fractions (can I get an amen?!?).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXpP2P6t1NMVqhpVY8glIky-WNKx3UhnhTdzE4XvInrlhXUmMbgllLilK_-T-TSsn8RqsyRa-qQnOI2UofKCJSEpYdPJAJeZvaOXLuvnXHUJDv3pn3miHffYBXyeU2510GRLvcwZk3700b/s1600/fav.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXpP2P6t1NMVqhpVY8glIky-WNKx3UhnhTdzE4XvInrlhXUmMbgllLilK_-T-TSsn8RqsyRa-qQnOI2UofKCJSEpYdPJAJeZvaOXLuvnXHUJDv3pn3miHffYBXyeU2510GRLvcwZk3700b/s320/fav.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The thing that makes me cringe is the phrase..."Well my kindergarteners can't do _____". A lot come in without hardly any learning/academic experience but weighing them down with "you can'ts" won't solve the problem.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I think collaboration is important. I'm blessed to be in a K-2nd grade hallway that works well together. I also love the teacher blogger, TPT, and Instagram community because they give you a kind of support that is different from talking about specific situations and kids at your school. It's more of a "Look what I tried and it worked..." , or "Oh yes I have that much laminate to cut out too!"</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm so excited to be a part of this Kinder Tribe and grow and learn together!</div>

I did not go to Vegas this year (next year my friends!) but a big takeaway that people were talking about was connecting and sharing with each other. That together we are better (shoutout <a href="http://www.luckylittlelearners.com/" target="_blank">Lucky Little Learners</a> and <a href="http://www.schroedershenanigansin2nd.com/" target="_blank">Schroeder Shenanigans in 2nd</a>). If you are not a kindergarten teacher, I've been seeing other tribes pop up. Use your grade level hashtag and go find your tribe!</div>

Flash back to the month of May. I remember telling my awesome grade level teaching partner aka TBFF (teacher best friend forever) that I was not going to spend that much money this summer since I wasn't updating my theme. I knew I was buying a cubby shelf and trays for it and other than that, I didn't plan on spending a lot. Now, I've kept a few receipts because at my school we can turn in $150 worth teach year. I know I've met that. Haha. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, here I am now when I think back to that statement I made to Bobbie. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz0pIwRW9xaziin0l-oOhEpSJvnM-dwPfsoTs1QYWYFx_6xG9mVO4330ejd-v1zSOZpmtySz-iC35CGWRAYRNHPWS-peTGH5mEaqorXhM587ymdq9xa6mWcH14IO4j63jylW_9GFvnKm1w/s1600/eyeblink.gif" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="155" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgz0pIwRW9xaziin0l-oOhEpSJvnM-dwPfsoTs1QYWYFx_6xG9mVO4330ejd-v1zSOZpmtySz-iC35CGWRAYRNHPWS-peTGH5mEaqorXhM587ymdq9xa6mWcH14IO4j63jylW_9GFvnKm1w/s400/eyeblink.gif" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Target Dollar Spot and Zulily are my weakness. Enough said.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So today I want to show you some things I purchased this summer that I am super excited about and I'll tell ya what I'm using them for.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Boogie Boards</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I LOVE whiteboards. Don't get me wrong. I have been seeing on other blogger's blogs how cool these ewriters are.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVGVkd_6kMupFTpXE6ZilGiTC_TLZGlM89itdfX0yaJOf9hAcqiQOteVOAtCHNtF1ocaH9XD6CE2L6qZxEDBMGdsuOqzV00Qiuut0ZQX09RnY8AAy46oqxAXXBjtVuqmJt59Hak7Iw1vCj/s1600/boogie1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVGVkd_6kMupFTpXE6ZilGiTC_TLZGlM89itdfX0yaJOf9hAcqiQOteVOAtCHNtF1ocaH9XD6CE2L6qZxEDBMGdsuOqzV00Qiuut0ZQX09RnY8AAy46oqxAXXBjtVuqmJt59Hak7Iw1vCj/s320/boogie1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You use a stylus (it attaches to that black thing at the top) to write on the black board. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWxRVZ5LYPailjhbfshQ-4WBBBV4x1_k6ebBnn28YIb7k-ECCnVdQbNQcca_21QEmP7CynhPZAZMpP6TiT2GhaANj9fs50e3sJFUYWHFlmL8F1gRfDrDYjpxsc-FbXbSV0dWM9tk2IdtM_/s1600/boogie2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWxRVZ5LYPailjhbfshQ-4WBBBV4x1_k6ebBnn28YIb7k-ECCnVdQbNQcca_21QEmP7CynhPZAZMpP6TiT2GhaANj9fs50e3sJFUYWHFlmL8F1gRfDrDYjpxsc-FbXbSV0dWM9tk2IdtM_/s320/boogie2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When you are finished all you have to do is push the white circle at the top and the writing is gone! There's no charger, no battery. It's awesome. It is also supposed to be scratch resistant. I'm sure my five and six year olds will test that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Sam's metal organization cart (aka IKEA knock off)</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My mom picked this up for me all excited because she thought they were cool. I found a spot to put it in my classroom next to my tiny desk and I'm excited for a little bit more storage space.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin9Xsa-BR_mLi1_tItjZHcOwOjBV5MoSaP3Hq_8H_qmeAmon9DvdsFHppjc-xIvhWS5QfPzwJyMeYMkHr40XtjMaSJ3WggLH81V7BzSIbT65c__lofrnjS9jCWqRb3WCNlSNNU1RYHnm5g/s1600/cart.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEin9Xsa-BR_mLi1_tItjZHcOwOjBV5MoSaP3Hq_8H_qmeAmon9DvdsFHppjc-xIvhWS5QfPzwJyMeYMkHr40XtjMaSJ3WggLH81V7BzSIbT65c__lofrnjS9jCWqRb3WCNlSNNU1RYHnm5g/s320/cart.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Cubby Shelf</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I posted this before this summer, but I'm so excited to get it out of the box and assemble...well, not so much the assembling part. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioYgnIoYw2491b4fFhcXUoG4cmYSzVIVbD0qrq7YaAIwNrz3wM6LMmmVOdx2dLjj5ugTjD3PXq279IejI8HQNL1mHt_86xggUWNp9eBqGhnw6K0TgaoI_UppR7OfSMCB72uQq021NrDARM/s1600/cubbyshelf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioYgnIoYw2491b4fFhcXUoG4cmYSzVIVbD0qrq7YaAIwNrz3wM6LMmmVOdx2dLjj5ugTjD3PXq279IejI8HQNL1mHt_86xggUWNp9eBqGhnw6K0TgaoI_UppR7OfSMCB72uQq021NrDARM/s320/cubbyshelf.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I bought similar tubs from Lakeshore. They are having a back to school sale and the tubs were pretty reasonable. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This cubby shelf will house my math tubs. This is something new I'm finally trying this year. Students will work independently or with a partner when they finish their math assignment until math is over. I don't know about you, but some of our math lessons are pretty short and the assignments do not take very long. So this gives them more practice plus me time to work with struggling students for math in a small group. Before I'd pop something on the smartboard for them to do but still wasn't totally freed up to work with math groups.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I made little labels and I can't wait. (Math Tub Labels coming soon to my TPT store)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Headphones</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.malekindergartenteacher.com/" target="_blank">Male Kindergarten Teacher </a>posted on his Instagram a couple of days ago about some headphones that came in that are made for younger students. They are called <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Kidz-Gear-Wired-Headphones-Kids/dp/B00AXE911W/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1437162702&sr=8-1&keywords=kidz+gear+headphones" target="_blank">Kidz Gear Headphones</a>. Mine should be arriving today. There are lots of bright colors to choose from. I ordered 4 blue ones for my Listening to Reading station.</div>

I have bought cheap Walmart headphones for under $10. I've even bought some close to $20 or slightly more from there or Target and they never last more than about a year. The sound either goes out in the headphones or they break. I've also had the problem with some of my very small kindergarteners having them slide so much even being adjusted. I've read lots of reviews and decided to give them a try!</div>

Oh man! This one is a tricky one for me because I have been on 4 amazing trips to 7 countries. Here's the 4 trips I attended with MSSU's Teacher Education Department as either a student or alumni. In China and England we were able to do observations at elementary schools. In Belize I student taught in a kindergarten aged class for a month.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
May 2010: China! - Beijing, Xi'an, Shanghai</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
May 2011: Europe! - Southampton (England), London, Paris, Barcelona</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
October 2011: Belize- San Ignacio - did 1 month of my student teaching there</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
June 2013: Europe again...Italy & Germany - Rome, Florence, Venice, and Munich</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is really hard to just choose one of these trips to show you. I'll show you my latest trip I did a couple of years ago to Italy and Germany. I love pictures, so I'll post some below from each city.</div>

There was a thunderstorm when we arrived at Pompeii. The "streets" are all stone...we had came from Positano and the beach so we were in flip flops. It's no wonder that someone didn't break an ankle. I slid around everywhere. It made it memorable though.</div>

In Rome at St. Peter's Basilica a few of us were waiting to go down to the crypts but they closed it for a mass. So we waited, and waited. Little did we know that it was worth it because the POPE came out and did a mass. Seriously! There he is! The day before we had arrived in time to see him speak at his window at the Vatican.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We took a train to nearby Dachau. It was a concentration camp in WW2. When we got off the train an old lady told us which bus to take to Dachau. We waited, waited, and waited some more. We finally realized she told us the wrong bus #. I'm pretty sure she did it on purpose. They're not too proud of that time in German history and a man we talked to later on in Munich said so many still deny it in ways...that they didn't know what was happening. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It was also one of the quietest places that wasn't "nature" that I've been to. Mostly everyone walking around taking it all in somberly.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our last day we went to Neuschwanstein Castle. Ludwig II had this castle built. It's nestled high up and quite the trek to walk up to it. It was gorgeous inside. He was obsessed with fairy tales and Wagner's operas. Disney used it as inspiration for Sleeping Beauty's castle.</div>

5 years ago was 2010 and I was 21 years old. I was an Elementary/Early Childhood major at Missouri Southern State University. I took my first international trip with the education department, spent tons of time with my friends, went to class, and worked at an after school program at a local elementary school through the Y.</div>

College: 5 years ago I had one more year left of college. Here's me doing a selfie in the teacher education work room (die cuts in the background). Come to think of it, I took a lot of selfies when I was younger.</div>

We did a lot of projects and lessons. Here's a history trunk we had to do. I did civil rights and found lots of cool things at flea markets including some great LIFE magazines. My dad and I stained that trunk. No clue where it is now. :/</div>

I loved sitting on the hill over the ball field at the old high school watching JHS play. Unfortunately a year later on May 22, 2011 we had an EF-5 tornado level the middle of our town from one end to the other (5 or 6 miles I believe) and the high school was smack in the middle of town. The new field that opened last year is beautiful but I miss that hill.</div>

China!: In May 2010 I went to China with a group from the ed dept at Southern. We went to Beijing, Xi'an, and Shanghai for 11 days. It was amazing. I don't know why I signed up. I do know that I thought I'd never get the opportunity to go there again and to seize it. </div>

We visited some schools in Shanghai! This was in an elementary school. Their gov't party lady who led a gov't club at that school didn't leave our sides. Haha! Desks, work books, and reciting.</div>

The Great Wall! Whew, climbing that thing in 85 degree weather packed with people was exhausting. The steps are very uneven and different sizes so that made it tricky as well.</div>

Hello! This week's "Teaching With Intention" book study focuses on Chapter 5- Swimming with Sharks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-cv4Omvupum7sbWk1BuVN1mlvNSQ1QYaukaGrmLFjV3Q7M06BIVhKFmXUoz2CKbE6-2bc7auhuL1onlvzLJbInPt0xlZayvIOmzCYrHXtcvQda2htaAGGZIEzw9asS1QuBjta9gW9y5xq/s1600/Shark.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="217" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi-cv4Omvupum7sbWk1BuVN1mlvNSQ1QYaukaGrmLFjV3Q7M06BIVhKFmXUoz2CKbE6-2bc7auhuL1onlvzLJbInPt0xlZayvIOmzCYrHXtcvQda2htaAGGZIEzw9asS1QuBjta9gW9y5xq/s400/Shark.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This chapter is all about a lesson in its entirety focusing on information about sharks through reading texts. The students make connections using old and new knowledge, also throwing in the mix...misconceptions.<br />
<br />
I want to start off with this quote straight from the book:<br />
<i>"Once we define our beliefs, align our practices, and know our children & curriculum well, we can create purposeful lessons anytime..."</i><br />
<br />
I loved her questions to ask yourself when you analyze your lessons that are on page 69.<br />
<br />
Debbie Miller went into a classroom in Denver and did a 2 day lesson with students about sharks. She learned they had already done some previous lessons on sharks. She explained how we have "files" in our brain that help us remember important things. We make connections between things we already knew and our new learning. The connections help us understand what we learned. One clever student described these files almost like a computer.<br />
<br />
<u><b>Debbie Miller set this up in 3 parts:</b></u><br />
*materials- sticky notes, black pens, chart paper, and a variety of books on the topic you are teaching<br />
*organizing the file<br />
*researching<br />
<br />
She had to explain to students about the "file" in your brain about sharks. She made a file with poster board and drew a line in half (like the file is laying open) and put "Schema"-what we think we know at the top and New Learning at the bottom. Then she had a little square in the bottom right corner for misconceptions. She had the students share out what they already know about sharks and they put those on sticky notes on the file. She then started reading from a shark book and shared how to model "New Learning" and how to write that short and sweet on a sticky. She then called on students to share their new learning. Lastly, she had them work in partners to read a shark book (a few pages) and share with each other their learning. <br />
<br />
<b>My Connections:</b><br />
I have done a similar lesson in the past, but with penguins. I like her idea of explaining it all like a file and having that visual. I do use sticky notes A LOT. So I was excited to see that. I also gave them time to go through penguin books with a partner. We did a lapbook project to go along with it. I'm excited this year to explain schema and making connections more. I'd like to try the file visual too! The key is modeling how to think about old knowledge and the connections to the new knowledge. Misconceptions are also a biggie for my group...we are 5 years old and have just a few misconceptions about things. ;)<br />

This was one of my kiddos who was so excited to make his interactive lapbook and that was what he said right before I took the picture. That was the day that I realized I needed to do many more similar lessons/projects. We get so busy doing the little assessments and making sure we are on track with district pacing guides that sometimes we forget to make it FUN! I found my kids were so much more engaged when it was hands on (duh!) and they got to take charge of their learning and somewhat lead where we were going with our research. You can click the picture to see it in my store.<br />
<br />
I'm excited to do more lessons like Debbie!<br />

I am linking up again this week for week #3 of the TPT Seller Challenge! This week is all about making a masterpiece. This can be sometime new or something you've been meaning to finish up. Here's the link to <a href="http://sparklinginsecondgrade.blogspot.com/2015/06/tpt-seller-challenge-week-3-make-your_29.html" target="_blank">Sparkling in Second</a> to get the template and to get started!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pocket-Change-Coin-Activities-Posters-1929432" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="397" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEXiFeH9kQ9JPxB_h5ySjmpPYjIsTxmf4Yy51UY9lmGKEoaZYhMj3makYhqiXD4WM7joy6y_MOT8CNdWtvRv43hSOHLj5sarJm9rl09YXMl8Wgpe-0wwRH-KgcUWRgFNJP-_cOP3r9uLzh/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-06-29+at+12.08.02+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I realized that I need to introduce coins to my kindergarteners. They do more in 1st grade in my building and I wanted them to be prepared. So...tada...I made this pack. It is ideal for kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Pocket-Change-Coin-Activities-Posters-1929432" target="_blank">Pocket Change!</a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
See the above picture to see what all it includes. Below I'll list some pictures from the pack. My favorite thing is the posters. I can't wait to hang them up!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here are those posters! The second set of the posters include a popular rhyme about each coin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I included a couple of short quick checks to see if your students know what the coins are or their worth. There are 2 on a page (I love to save paper when I can!)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYb4obgLCASN8HQ9yH3ZkpP4CtrNHXMLY54IkV7_8uXS9iLj5zNSlUx4Za6ZQgEq-Zh-yJ-4RtKSHskwO3TTY-f8DwsFONOtksLNfeLq-TP1NeY1CBONQW_MRtMDSmoDlLxb_OKIYvcohR/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-06-29+at+11.51.40+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYb4obgLCASN8HQ9yH3ZkpP4CtrNHXMLY54IkV7_8uXS9iLj5zNSlUx4Za6ZQgEq-Zh-yJ-4RtKSHskwO3TTY-f8DwsFONOtksLNfeLq-TP1NeY1CBONQW_MRtMDSmoDlLxb_OKIYvcohR/s320/Screen+Shot+2015-06-29+at+11.51.40+AM.png" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Practice sheets for each coin are in this pack. They have to find and color the coin, trace and write how much the coin is worth, trace and write the coin name, and draw their own coin.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love sorts! My kids love sorts! Included is a sort that you can do as a whole group, in small groups, or students can do at a math station. I can't believe I had a huge pocket chart and never used it much till last year. Now, I LOVE it and love to make things for it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Lastly, I included a printable reader that you can cut (again, I wanted to save paper), put together, and staple. The kids fill in some things on each page and color the coin. I forgot to snap a picture of it. Oops!</div>

I enjoyed this motivation to finish this resource. I started it a couple of weeks ago. </div>

<br />
I don't know about you but I kept seeing these beautiful and colorful bins on Instagram that teachers are posting that are from The Dollar Tree...so I had just had to go to my local Dollar Tree to see them for myself.<br />
<br />
Now, I didn't need bins...but any time I go to the Dollar Tree I always find some great things for my classroom. I did end up staring at the pretty bins though. ;)<br />
<br />
Here's my latest mini-haul!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfugBltpk-sp1gNbbgIK9JMCQjjgK6gSCBSrLN1UAoizCw1ZSyvBaChFRlFgFayoeA_KvGPTi9W_H84kMbVisP2eQn1586DHpBjjyg3BDAle2xzSgaQNmhCewNoClTXTz2B_DOxWOqECKQ/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-06-23+at+3.07.24+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgfugBltpk-sp1gNbbgIK9JMCQjjgK6gSCBSrLN1UAoizCw1ZSyvBaChFRlFgFayoeA_KvGPTi9W_H84kMbVisP2eQn1586DHpBjjyg3BDAle2xzSgaQNmhCewNoClTXTz2B_DOxWOqECKQ/s400/Screen+Shot+2015-06-23+at+3.07.24+PM.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Okay, so I ended up with a few bins! Ha! 7 to be exact. They look like a great size for leveled readers. I have a new knock off Ikea cart that my mom found for me at Sam's in a marked down area. I figured I may put my leveled readers on that cart in these little bins. During my Teaching With Intention book study, I learned that it's best to spread out your library to not just one area of your room...but multiple areas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvzjXakrVSOeZHk8MG9pdy3gkULXRGHGcuQN7lfh6-FpePmUSKJu30_s52s0l6d0ypn7z4eJFLPlW_j4TppMs7N-5QSkPassRjg_-XGpTRXychPwfMar2_S46YvxVgQPUDDznZDYMofjJf/s1600/IMG_3464.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvzjXakrVSOeZHk8MG9pdy3gkULXRGHGcuQN7lfh6-FpePmUSKJu30_s52s0l6d0ypn7z4eJFLPlW_j4TppMs7N-5QSkPassRjg_-XGpTRXychPwfMar2_S46YvxVgQPUDDznZDYMofjJf/s320/IMG_3464.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These dice I had to have! I got one of each color. I'll use them in math tubs, whole group math lessons, and maybe even small groups for math.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1RnCs3HttdPeb4qSR-Mfp44tGFE2XotLSr6C6qhMKoge7nvHIElaXvnqZ7z3K_ShEC4zBZqq5OnOpebMJ2et10JHkNECMQk0UBKWM0HkanA9Bs8gcTbRAg0jSX8ayhfbTpw0rgPZ8wAp-/s1600/IMG_3463.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi1RnCs3HttdPeb4qSR-Mfp44tGFE2XotLSr6C6qhMKoge7nvHIElaXvnqZ7z3K_ShEC4zBZqq5OnOpebMJ2et10JHkNECMQk0UBKWM0HkanA9Bs8gcTbRAg0jSX8ayhfbTpw0rgPZ8wAp-/s320/IMG_3463.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I thought this border was cute! I picked up 3 since I'm unsure where exactly I'll use it, and how much of it I need. The teacher section was a little sparse in spots so I may have to go back and see what else is there.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I got some silly straws for birthday prizes. Included below is a *FREEBIE* that is a topper to these fun straws!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I want to do a sensory bin this year. I keep seeing them and I want to try it. In college I had to do a lot of hours in the child development center upstairs in our education department. The preschool classes there had them. I have to make mine academic since I'm not encouraged to do "centers". Mr. Greg from <a href="http://www.thekindergartensmorgasboard.com/2015/06/a-kindergarten-smorgasboard-monday-made_8.html" target="_blank">The Kindergarten Smorgasboard</a> shared an awesome post on how to make little clear stone alphabet stones. So to start off the year I'll have those inside it for students to find. Here's my last purchase for that sensory bin...straws! Cut up a bunch of colorful straws for the kids to sift through. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today I am linking up with <a href="http://www.schroedershenanigansin2nd.com/2015/06/teaching-with-intention-chapter-4.html#comment-form" target="_blank">Schroeder Shenanigans in 2nd</a> and <a href="http://positivelylearning.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Positively Learning</a> for Chapter for of <a href="http://www.thekindergartensmorgasboard.com/" target="_blank">Mr. Greg's</a> Teaching with Intention book study!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b><span style="font-size: large;">Chapter 4: Creating Classroom Cultures That Support and Promote Student Thinking!</span></b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
One of the first things I jotted down while reading this chapter is Debbie Miller's idea of being a reflective teacher (reader and writer) by carrying a notebook around with you for when you want to write something down. She talked about how she went to the Hawaiian ice place and the mood struck to write a poem. She then shared that poem with her students the next day. LOVE that! There's always things I wish to share or remember for a writing idea for my Writer's Workshop minilesson and sometimes, I simply forget.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This chapter is in 3 sections...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
1) putting our thinking on display </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2) the intentional use of language</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3) making thinking visible, public, and permanent</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Putting Our Thinking on Display!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* show your curiosity to your students!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* show what thinking looks like</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* show how to consider other people's perspectives</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* model being reflective</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* show them what it means to have a "healthy" skepticism</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Telling is NOT showing. You have to model and show the students what thinking looks like. How are they supposed to learn how to think and question things when they haven't been showed what that looks like. I teach kindergarten so I feel like it's the perfect time to show them how to think. They are learning how to be little learners in my room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This may be a sign from the Lord or something...but everywhere lately I have been hearing this phrase "BE PRESENT". I've heard it in church with our recently finished series, I've seen articles on Facebook talking about putting down your phone and living in the moment, it's in this book, I saw some cute prints at Hobby Lobby about being present. I feel like this statement is my theme for the summer. But it totally makes sense. In your classroom, you need to be aware and present. When you're present with your kids you are hearing what they have to say and you are really focusing in on what is going on. That's what good thinkers do! Boom. Makes perfect sense to me. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When you're present...Debbie Miller says you are thoughtful, curious, and reflective. Don't get wrapped up in the <i>stuff</i>. We can be so busy managing that we are really listening.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Students need to see it, thinking needs to be visible. She lists comprehension strategies and how we have to show them our thinking. Students need to learn how to think like that!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>The Intentional Use of Language:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Be present. :) There it is again. Students know when we are not just talking, but making it meaningful and thoughtful.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love her example about the student who is explaining something and it takes forever and you're wondering where they are going. How sometimes we ask another student to help him. She says not to do that. Ahhhem...guilty sometimes! She suggests letting them keep going so they know you believe in them.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
She provides some other scenarios about the kids who you aren't sure what they are talking about or they say something totally off the wall. I love that last one. That's my life in kindergarten some days, especially the beginning of the year! Debbie Miller shows it's important to really listen to these students and not just dismiss their crazy answers or their long stories, to ask them questions, prompt them, and show their learning is important. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
We want students to be able to explain their learning, but when we dismiss them quickly or call on someone else...they aren't going to learn how to do that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Making Thinking Visible, Public, and Permanent.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* Thinking aloud your thinking...it's the best way to make it visible!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* Evidence of thinking should be all over the place! -anchor charts, quotes, student work</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* Making thinking public and permanent in your classroom, it shows the students that their thinking matters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
* Document students' thinking.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In my classroom I have what the students are learning posted every day. I know lots of people do. I have never done this much before this school year. My school (and district) started doing visible learning. I needed to find a way to post our learning intentions and success criteria. That way students, me, and anyone who comes in can see what we are learning and students should be able to say what we are learning and how to do that.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_S9VUXP6kTN66M11UXc-3yN0GmnG2tPDTOiXGzS1JQa1Nqrd5R9ca5zZ6pslo2msTDQtvv7fyxfiYNlJgUa4szETQwecSjYBFohEbDB1JmYPADZXVbKkdIUspKGdZ6pozFoGpwcXbDMYN/s1600/learningintentions.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_S9VUXP6kTN66M11UXc-3yN0GmnG2tPDTOiXGzS1JQa1Nqrd5R9ca5zZ6pslo2msTDQtvv7fyxfiYNlJgUa4szETQwecSjYBFohEbDB1JmYPADZXVbKkdIUspKGdZ6pozFoGpwcXbDMYN/s640/learningintentions.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I didn't have the picture on my phone but remembered I put one on Instagram. This is when I was first putting it up in my classroom. The white sheets I ended up sliding on the colorful sheets to write on. I laminated them and wrote each week what we were learning in each subject area. The bottom row was "I have mastered it when..." and I wrote the "I can" statement with the steps to master that learning.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This by the end of year became easier for my students when someone would come in and ask them what they are doing and how do they know if they can do it. Our school's goal was that at any given time students can tell what they are learning and how or what steps need to be taken to learn it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I LOVE my clothesline in my classroom. I hang anchor charts and student work on it. I also try to hang work outside in the halls.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I enjoyed this chapter because it made me think about how I need to show my thinking and learning more than I do so that my students learn how to show their thinking as well. It's definitely given me some things to think about! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

My one item that means the world to me is my college diploma from MSSU.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I worked so hard throughout school to get where I am. I graduated in December 2011 Cum Laude with my degree in Elementary Education - Early Childhood (of course my emphasis is Early Childhood and I have the extra semester it shows for it...but they told me they don't put the emphasis on the diploma. Boo).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My dad had gone to college and graduated and is now an architect. My mom wanted to be a teacher and got a few semesters in and realized she couldn't afford it all on her own. None of my grandparents had gone to college. Many of my older cousins got degrees.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd say more than 1/2 of the girls I went to high school with started college and then eventually stopped due to a boyfriend who convinced them otherwise, having a child, money problems, or just life happening. I worked at the Y after school program, did classes in the mornings, and kept my focus strong. I have always been focused on my goals when I set them. College was no different. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have my diploma framed and hanging in my classroom by my desk. In a couple of years I'll have my master's degree diploma below it. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>I believe education is something that you can't have taken away from you. You can have all your material items taken away...but no one can take away your knowledge. </b></div>

This week's challenge...<br />
<br />
Dare to Dream!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpQL0vbPWzj1haWLAx1wr2DXLpsM9cCEw9M6wdxbCJSLDkUP4793aQfMTFMZCeQGrz81Di75kXo-RnlPJ3Z8NOjc6CtznKhK2-fewbjj4K4xjS0clTxEXry-SeKQwJoZEX3X_uobwfWDAA/s1600/Screen+Shot+2015-06-22+at+8.42.34+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="318" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjpQL0vbPWzj1haWLAx1wr2DXLpsM9cCEw9M6wdxbCJSLDkUP4793aQfMTFMZCeQGrz81Di75kXo-RnlPJ3Z8NOjc6CtznKhK2-fewbjj4K4xjS0clTxEXry-SeKQwJoZEX3X_uobwfWDAA/s320/Screen+Shot+2015-06-22+at+8.42.34+AM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I started TPT almost one year ago. I'm still new at it. I think it's been awesome to connect with other teachers, learn new things, and share my creations. I don't expect to hit gold...that's not why I do it. But the little extra income is certainly nice. We put so much of our own money into our rooms and kids every year...it's nice to get a little extra too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<b>Dream 1: Buy a house!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have been saving up money by living at home. I also thought at one point last year that I would be moving in with someone (and in a different state). That fizzled. So last year I was getting over that heartbreak and continued staying at home. I know renting is great for some people, I just really would rather not. I'm close to being able to have a very nice downpayment. I'd love to find a small but nice house in my town. TPT has helped me save even more than I thought. </div>

<b>Dream 2: Travel!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you follow me on Instagram (@misskatesdesk) or on Bloglovin...you have probably noticed that I love to travel. Since 2010 I have traveled to 7 countries as a student or almuni with my university I graduated from. I've been to China, England, France, Spain, Belize (did student teaching there for a month), Italy, and Germany. China is where I found my travel bug. I'd love to continue traveling for the rest of my life. Thankfully as teachers, we have all summer to do that! Last year I was using part of my TPT earnings for a trip to Paris in July. That trip fell through. So instead, I'm sticking some of it back for Vegas next July! Also, a professor I've traveled with a lot has retired but still is going to do some trips here and there. Her next one is Greece! Count me in!</div>

Here's the latest group I went with in 2013. We are pictured above Florence, Italy. (I'm in the white)</div>

<b>Dream 3: Help Others!</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'd love to be able to do something nice for my parents. A trip or a nice gift maybe. They have done so much for me and have been my biggest cheerleaders. I also enjoy helping people through my TPT store! For several years so many people helped me with providing awesome resources when I was a new teacher and unsure of ideas and what to do. I hope that my TPT store can help others!</div>

My family doesn't love pictures! I was tired of scrolling through to find one with all of us. Or just my parents. So I gave up and chose this one of my brother and mom in Fayetteville, Arkansas when we went to visit Hank one weekend. Woo pig sooie!</div>
